CHAPTER PROFILE

Grant County Genealogical Society held their organizational meeting in December, 1974.  Seventeen members chartered the society in January, 1975.  At the end of the first year total membership equaled 31.  We currently average 140 members yearly.

The cemeteries of Grant County have been alphabetically indexed by surname on 3x5 cards.  Tombstones were originally copied from 1978-1981, updated in the early 2000 and is now updated continually by our cemetery committee by newspaper obituaries.  With cremation now more prevalent some burials are unknown.  See the cemetery listing on our Cemeteries page.  We have scrapbooks containing obituaries for various years which are indexed by surname.

Our society’s library contains family genealogies, history books, maps of foreign countries, newsletter exchanges from other genealogy societies, indexed scrapbooks, any books our society has published and other books pertaining to Grant County or genealogy.  A complete list is available at each meeting and materials may be checked out to any member.

We have published the Index Books for the Grant County Marriages from the earliest date through Jun 2015 which constitutes a total of twelve books.  The books are alphabetized by bride and groom, then the marriage date with the volume and page where the original license is filed.  We have also published Grant County Genealogical Society Surname Index Volume I (1976-April 1989) Volume II (covers May 1989-April 1993) and Volume III (covers May 1993-April 2003) which contains our members’ ancestral charts information.  Grant County WI Birth Records (Earliest to 1891) and the 1870 Federal Census of Grant County (2 volume set) were donated by members for our society to sell.  The supply of the reprint of C.W. Butterfield’s 1881 History of Grant County, Wisconsin, which included an index, has been sold out. Purchase information on these items is available on our Publications For Sale page.

We offer a free Centennial Certificate to any person born in Grant County or any resident now living in our county.  A Pioneer Certificate is available to any descendant of a pioneer living in the county prior to 1899 ($5 charge). For more information or to apply see our Certificates page.
